Matrix had slapped the snooze button a half a dozen times by now. ~Ug, Its time to get up already?~ Matrix said to himself. Matrix sat up in bed and rubbed his eyes briefly. "Damn, I didn't sleep very well at all. I could use a few days R&R." "Please rephrase the request. Unable to comply" said the computer voice. "Computer, disregard. I'm talking to myself." ~Some day I'm going to disconnect that voice interface.~ Matrix swung around out of bed, pulled the covers off and headed to his bathroom. 13 minutes later he exited his quarters with the usual PADD in hand and headed for the officers mess. Without a second thought Matrix passed a few dozen crew members along the way without glancing up to acknowledge anyone. He failed to notice the new lilac bushes in bloom in the promenade, but his olfactory senses enjoyed the scent even only a moment. The turbo lift doors closed with Matrix the only one inside. "Level 3." It wasn't unusual for the mess to be devoid of most people. It was between shift changes and people were most likely getting to their staterooms or to their assigned departments. Matrix smiled at the concierge and took a seat near the back of room. After ordering the "Colorado" breakfast he once again took to his PADD. After reading the current status displays he paused, put the PADD down and looked up and slightly to his right. No focusing on anything in particular, not noticing the waiter had already placing his breakfast on the table. "Aw, thank you," said Matrix aloud almost as an after thought. The waiter had almost made it back to the kitchen and probably didn't hear hear him anyway. The four-egged omelet , potatoes, muffin and two pieces of bacon were gone without concern. Matrix let loose a small burp and sat back contemplating today's workload. He waived the waiter off to say. 'I don't need anything.' Matrix stood up, adjusted his uniform, nodded a thank you to the waiter and exited the mess hall. Matrix felt that today was going to be interesting. ~I need to get with Commander Sarouk today and give him and update. Off to Engineering.~ (posted by Steve) ======================================================================================================================== (USS Paladin - Deck 19 (Cargo Bay 1) - Agent - 1659) The blue containers were dropped and the officers who dropped them left the cargo bay. The cargo bay was now empty of all people. The agent knew it was because she had just finished a bio scan of the room on her head set. She pushed the lid with the her feet. The lid rose and fell off of the container. The agent then pulled herself out of the container. Once out she looked around the cargo bay. She did another scan, but this time she scanned for anything that would be useful to her. After her scan was complete she concluded that nothing could be used. So she moved on to her original plan. She moved over to the jefferies tube, and opened it up. She went inside to began setting up her plan. I suggest you warn them liberally beforehand of that fact." "I will do just that Dr. We will try to adhere to your request." Calvin said agreeing. "Oh! I am going to be stuck dickering with the hospital administrator for a while now, I'd suggest waiting to send them for another half hour or so, that way I can situate them where I want them." Brownlee reported. Eva scowled, looking at the main view screen. ~You did WHAT!?~ She thought feeling her anger rise. She listened to the exchange between O'Connor and Matrix, her anger only rising. "Get us out of the atmosphere now!" She snapped, "If possible, lock a tractor beam on the Steamrunner and pull it into orbit with us but don't risk the ship, if we don't have the power then they will just have to fend for themselves." She shook her head as she watched O'Connor and Matrix get to work on pulling the Paladin out of the planets atmosphere. Eva just sat in her chair, her eyes narrowed in barely contained fury. "I can compensate, for now, I'm re routing power through the tertiary EPS taps, but they won't hold out for long. I estimate one minute until a manifold failure of the EPS regulators." Michael said as he worked on re-routing power around the weakening areas. "We'll have to get the Paladin out of here and soon," said Matrix. "Captain, the tertiary core is approaching critical. He was unable to make it back to main engineering in time to help. Beads of sweat was running down his face as he walked passed the engineering doors. He looked inside and saw a cart full of engineering tools tipped over on its side with the tools knocked off. He bent over and put the cart on its upright and then filled the cart with the tools lying on the ground. He continued to scan engineering and get a feel of what had just happened. He watched engineering teams briskly walking by in a hurry to get to their destination. No doubt they were on their way for more repairs of the ship. He then spotted Alura. He walked over to her. "Alura, what happened?" (posted by Calvin) ======================================================================================================================== (USS Paladin, Bridge - ACEO LT JG Steven Matrix - 1723) Matrix took the time in the turbo lift to access ships status and formulate a repair plan. He was still steaming over the predicament O'Connor put the ship in and he and engineering were now left to pickup the pieces. Still he had to admire how relaxed Michael was on the bridge. Perhaps too relaxed. ~Looks like the priority will be the tertiary warp core for now.~ A few moments passed the the turbo lift doors opened on the engineering deck. It was short walk to main engineering. As Matrix entered the engineering area crews were already pouring over various consoles. Ensign Zack was busy cleaning up the cart he'd tripped over earlier in a haste to get to the bridge. "Ensign Tristen, my apologies for that mess. It was my fault for not watching where I was walking." Matrix said with a smile. (Reply Tristen) "Zack, would you follow me for a moment? I want to get my officers together and discuss the game plan." (Reply Tristen) As the walked deeper into engineering Matrix noticed Ensign Rathyn at a control panel. "Awh, Ensign Rathyn. I thank you for getting me and the ship out of trouble in a hurry. You're resourcefulness, skill and speed probably saved a lot of lives today." (Reply Rathyn) Matrix smiled, "Lets all gather around the status board. Alura, after this is all over you'd better cash in on my offer. In fact I'll extend that offer to all of you when all of this is over. Dinner on me for a week." (Reply Rathyn, Tristen, Durron (IYW)) "Okay, anyone seen Kyp?" Matrix scanned engineering briefly. Anything else damaged, destroyed or needing repair?" (Reply Tristen, Rathyn, Durron (IYA)) Matrix took a seat at the status board. "We should probably coordinate with operations and certainly the bridge. Alura, would you contact Mr. O'Connor on the bridge and ask him what his priorities are, if he plans on taking on any Romulans or taking a dip in the atmosphere again?" Matrix smiled. (Reply Rathyn) "Zack, check out the status of the rest of the ship. See if there are any other issues we should be working on as well. Anything that could potentially put the ship at risk if we don't get it repaired in a hurry. In other words, if we've missed anything, like the damn warp core antimatter container is leaking." Hopefully circumstances wouldn't force her to actually enter Cargo Bay Three. Nurse Florence had then begun splitting up the patients in the lobby and sending them to different areas which Jared had decided on earlier, patients with broken bones, contusions, and assorted non-emergency trauma had been sent to the east ward to receive treatment, when the hub sites were open to receive them they would be rerouted to those sites, bypassing the hospital completely. Patients showing signs of cardiac, circulatory or gastric distress were sent to the same ward, the staff there had not yet been exposed to the level of hysteria and confusion prevelant in the rest of the hospital and would be able to care for them. The sight of hysteria in the rest was almost unnerving, anyone who had any sort of upper respiratory symptoms (For that is how the virus normally manifested itself) were in a near panic, the nurse had been instructed to reroute them to the large operating room and staging area on the second floor that was being filled with portable cots and movable beds, the IV and diagnostic equipment were in short supply as the hospital was ill equipped to deal with an outbreak of this magnitude but he was managing, if only the flood of patients would stop he might be able to catch up. "Listen to doctor Keller, Timothy" The boys father told him as he held his son back on the bed. "He needs to run some tests." "I hate hospitals." The small diagnostic device Jared was holding whirred methodically as he moved it over the boys upper body and cranium, turning his head slightly to the side he could watch the vital signs being projected on the tricorder set up on a tray beside the bed. "I'm not seeing anything abnormal sir, it appears to be a common strain of influenza but it will take lab tests to confirm the diagnosis." "So it's just the flu right?" "As I said sir it will take a lab test to confirm the diag..." "Since he doesn't have the plague I'm getting him out of here." The man began pulling on the boy. "Sir I can not let the young man leave until my diagnosis is confirmed, if he leaves here and has the plague not only would he die but he could infect others." "I'm not leaving my boy here." The look in the mans eyes was like the scores he had already seen, the man had seen hope then seemingly had it snatched away and the fear the plague engendered was written in his eyes. "Sir I'm sorry but he needs to be completely checked out bef..." The punch the man threw was intercepted by one of the marines who had been on the other side of the room but seeing the mounting tension he had sidled up to the periphery of the face-off, the BDU clad hand caught the mans fist and the fellow grunted as the force of his punch was instantly retarded and redirected back into his hand by the metal of the powered armor. "Owwww! #$^%$!" "Let my dad alone." The boy jumped off the bed and began beating at the side of the marine but was thwarted by the armor. The marine pulled the frightened man in close and whispered so that only the father could hear him through the vocalizer of his pallas helmet. The man was like a rag doll in his grip, the armor being 10 times stronger than he was. "Sir you are attempting to interfere with the doctors duties in a violent manner and I can't allow that, Doctor Keller has the boys best interests at heart and at the moment you are not only causing a disturbance but are frightening your son by your show of fear. I suggest you calm down and do the right thing or I will have you incarcerated and you wil not see the boy again until after your hearing." Jared saw the man relax after a moment due to something the marine had said and after steeling himself he turned to Timothy. "Son you need to do as the doctor says." Jared heard no more as his combadge activated, he turned from the scene, taking in the human misery in the rapidly filling ward as Nissa spoke. =^= "Ensign Whetari to Dr. Keller.=^= "Keller here Ms. Whetari." =^= Yes, Doctor. I've moved from the lab and I am now in a separate ward on the 5th floor. It appears to have been abandoned. I need all available personnel and any medications you have synthesized for the plague - if any - up here as soon as possible. =^= ~A medication FOR the plague? I wished.~ "Nissa we have nothing synthesized for the plague at this time although Dr. O'Shea is working on a supply of serum that may help prevent infection if given before exposure." He motioned an orderly over. "Hold on a moment." He spoke as the orderly neared him. "I want a team of trauma care from the emergency room sent to the fifth floor right away to a ward the staff has abandoned, do you know which one that is?" The man shuddered. "Yes I do and I doubt I'l be able to get any volunteers for it, it's a room for the dead and dying." "I don't care if it's hell and the devils all have little pitchforks!" Jareds voice stayed low but had a razor edge and his eyes were on fire as he stared the man down. "Go there and tell them I want three in biosuits there NOW! That is an order. Tell them I am asking for volunteers but I will send in marines to pick a crew if they can't decide for themselves and they have ten minutes. Before you go where is the medical supply room on the fifth floor?"" "Y..yes sir doctor... sir." He thought frantically, his mind racing before answering. "The medical supplies are on the south side of the floor I believe in a locked room, it's labeled clearly."The man stammered and almost ran as he turned and left Jared there wondering how much worse it could get before they could get the situation turned around. He tapped his combadge again. "Nissa I am dispatching a team of three to your location, they should be arriving within fifteen minutes. Medications are in a locked but labeled room on the south side of that floor. A combination of Hypazanatol and tricordrazine seem to ease the symptoms of stage one and two, if and when we receive medications to combat the plague you will be the first recipients." (Reply: Nissa) He sighed. "Do everything you can to make them comfortable, I can promise nothing for now. Keller out." I just wish we could do more.” Nissa replied as she administered a sedative to a stage three gentleman that the Marine alerted her to. I don’t want these people to be forgotten again.” She added with a sigh, even though she knew that he was doing all he could for all the stricken. =/\=Do everything you can to make them comfortable, I can promise nothing for now. Keller out.=/\= He concluded, closing the channel. Helping the Marine settle an coughing older woman down in the stage two group, Nissa motioned him aside. “Dr. Keller is sending up a team of three to assist us and discovered the location of the storage room on this floor. It is on the southern side and will be locked,” she explained. (Reply Tam) “Hypazanatol and tricordrazine. Dr. Keller confirmed that both medications help ease symptoms in stage one and two. Helping the Doctor settle an coughing older woman down in the stage two group, Nissa motioned Rellam aside. "Dr. Keller is sending up a team of three to assist us and discovered the location of the storage room on this floor. It is on the southern side and will be locked," she explained. With a deadpan voice and face, Rellam informed the doctor that a locked door wouldn't be much trouble. "What would you like retrieved from the locker?" Rellam asked. "Hypazanatol and tricordrazine. Dr. Keller confirmed that both medications help ease symptoms in stage one and two. Best thing we can do for patients in stage three is to isolate them and make them as comfortable as possible, sedating them if necessary. We should try to clear the corpses…" Nissa coughed, "as soon as we can." "I'll retrieve the medicine, and be back shortly. Stay in view of Sergeant Miller, if you would sir." Rellam said, informed Miller that he was heading off for the medicine, then trotted out of the ward and down the hall. Reaching the door where the medicine was, Rellam stopped and did the first thing that most people trying to break into a room forgot to try...he checked to make sure the door was actually locked. Finding that indeed it was locked, he pressed his finger to the door locked and found that his ID was rejected. Shrugged, Rellam plugged the infiltration unit of his Recon armor into the door computer he let his suit check the lock. "Computer, how long will it take to break this lock without setting off any alarms?" Rellam asked the suits AI. [15 minutes, lock used a 7 sigma cypher, addendum, all alarm systems have been deactivated to this floor] ~~I don't have that much time...~~ Rellam thought before unplugging his suit from the door. ~~Probably turned off the alarm system when they abandoned the floor so people wouldn't know that people were dropping like flies~~ Rellam knelt down and found the emergency panel near the base of the door. His suits sensors showed that the plate covering the access panel was fairly thin, apparently they weren't expecting a Marine in Battle armor to try breaking into the pharmacy when they designed the security system. Leaning back, Rellam threw a solid, armor augmented, punch at center of the plate, putting a very large dent in it, and causing the edged to curl away from the rest of the wall. He easily peeled the plate the rest of the way off, then pulled the emergency release and slid the door open. He walked inside the room and looked around, finding the medicines that the doctor had asked for, he quickly grabbed the vials and put them in one of the pouches on his harness. Before leaving he took a few extra drugs, some sedatives, narcotics, and other more deadly drugs, just in case the need arose when things went south, and he was certain they would. Heading out of the room he closed the doors and phasered the cover plate back on the release. He jogged back to the ward and quickly found the doctor. "Sir, I have the medicine you asked for," Rellam said. The man had severe congestion and fever and was coughing heavily and as he moved off he stopped to lean against the wall, the woman put her arms around him in support but the orderly however didn't approach him, just continued as though he had seen nothing. Tyla's eyes burned at his standoffish reaction and as she turned back to look at the approaching woman leading a small child tears began to well up, focusing on the family pair though helped. "My boy is sick." The woman looked haggard and worn, she was dressed in a faded blouse of blue and pants of black with black flats. The boy was in the neighborhood of 6 to 8 years Tyla judged and wearing a greyish jacket and khaki pants, he had jet black hair. "How old is he?" She knelt down and motioned him to come to her as the woman let go of his hand. "Eight years old." She said, her face rife with worry. "His name is Peter." "What's wrong with you Peter?" She asked as he hesitated then came to her. "My stomach is sick and my head hurts." He looked back at his mother then turned back to Tyla. She held up the tricorder and flipped it on and began scanning him. "You have a fever all right." She could have told him that without the instrument as it was 102, she could have felt it with her hand, suddenly she began to hate the biosuit and the way it isolated her from her charges. "My nose itches too and it's been running." He offered then sneezed suddenly. "I can see it." She smiled at him for an instant, dreading what she was about to do, she was going to send him up to the ward on the second floor so that he could be with the other dying people who had come here looking for a cure or a diagnosis of some simple ailment. It might be that he had something simple but there he would be exposed to the plague and would surely catch it anyway and they were nowhere near a cure. "I'm going to send you to Doctor Keller Peter, he'll look at you and run some tests." "Is he nice?" The boy looked afraid. "Yes he is," She gave him a smile. "He has two girls of his own, they're not on the ship with him, they're at starbase Geneva with their mother but I've met them and they love their father. he is a very nice man." "Good." His face screwed up in sudden pain. "My head hurts." "I'll give you an anelgesic before you go up." She reached into the cabinet beside her and took out a small packet, after fumbling with it because of the gloves she finally got it torn open wanting to curse as she did so, she held it back though. "Open your mouth." As he did so she placed the lozenge on his tongue. "Now close your mouth but don't swallow, it will dissolve quickly. He nodded his head and after a few seconds she asked, "Is it all gone?" He nodded and opened his mouth, sticking out his tongue so she could see it was gone. "Good," She stood up and spoke to the woman. "Follow the orderly and he'll take you to Dr. Keller." She mother nodded and moved forward to take his hand, then began leading him toward the waiting man. Tyla turned to watch them go , the tears starting up again, looking down at her gloved hands on impulse she grabbed the right one in her left and tore the glove off, followed by the reverse. After her gloves were off she grabbed her helmet and prepared to pull on it. "Here, here now!" A security guard from the Paladin who had been moving the people along was moving toward her with a shocked look on his face. "Nurse you can't be doing that." "Who says I can't?" With a wrench she tore it free. "It's my choice. I can't do my job with this on." "But you'll be..." "Exposed?" She nodded her head savagely. "Yes but since when am I any better than they are, besides we took a vitamin shot before we came. Surely we'll find a cure before I get it." "And if not?" The look on his face was thunderous. "Then I'll be where they are." She looked beyond him at the coughing, frightened people. "Right now that's not looking so bad." He judged they had arleady taken in close to sixty already and more were showing up every few minutes. Of course his chance to grab a moment of peace was interrupted. =^= Doctor Keller.=^= "Jared here nurse." =^= Doctor must I continue to send children to the main ward? The floor should have a nursery or something!" His eyes narrowed a moment at that. "The question is one of manpower nurse, not policy." =^= Could you assign someone to process the children for you then you can make regular stops there? Please doctor.=^= The tone in her voice belied a disintigrating emotional state despite her attempts to keep her voice even. "Actually that is an excellent idea." He said thoughtfully. "I'll assign someone to do that, no sense in exposing the children needlessly." ~Just have to find someone to free up and lo and behold we have all these perfectly available security men, all they need to do is make the kiddies comfortable till I arrive.~ His eyes lit up at that. "I'll have it set up immediately. By the way I've found a deep scan trace that can filter out a number of candidates of stage one and two, I'm downloading it to your scanner now." He tapped in the proper medical interlink coordinates then scrolled to the scan program load point. Some of the tells for the first two stages were quite distinct from the everyday viruses and bacteria borne diseases, while this was certainly not a complete scan and could not take the place of blood tests it COULD catch some of the more obvious cases. "Downloading now. This is only a test to detect the most obvious so that you can verify before sending someone up, if you get a positive reading notify me immediately and it'll speed up the processing when they arrive." =^=Yes sir.=^= Her voice sounded a trifle relieved. =^=Thank you sir, Tyla out.=^= Jared closed his eyes as he took a deep breath then he looked around, spotting two officers standing watch down the hall that looked extraneous he began walking toward them. He made his way around and through the crowded halls to her. "Sir, I have the medicine you asked for," he said. She took note as he opened one of the pouches on his harness. She noticed that he had taken various sedatives and some drugs that she expected they would only use in the most dire of circumstances. "Good job. Thank you for your assistance." Nissa said quietly as she discreetly removed a selection of medications, including some lethal ones, from his pouch. "I've explained to the basics of the plague to Miller and have instructed him on what to do for various stage patients. The drug cocktail that I mentioned earlier is given to Stage I and II patients, while the best we can do for Stage III is a sedative, at least for now." Nissa looked carefully at the Marine as she felt the vials in her hands. "In the later stages...if things get bad in the ward - well, I expect that you have a contingency plan for that." (Reply Tam) Placing the hypazanatol and tricordrazine in hyposprays, Nissa treated the girl she'd been tending, who was in Stage II. Most of the patients in the ward were Stage II or beyond, but Nissa wasn't ready to give up. The Marine turned first, but Nissa saw the help that Keller had sent out of the corner of her eye. She turned and she followed the eyes of the assistants as they swept over the diverse humanity that lay dying in the ward. Motioning them over as she moved to meet them, she silently indicated that the Marine should follow. The two moons of Beta Aquarii were magnificent. The moon to Calvin's left was full and the moon to his right was a beautiful half moon. Calvin was standing on a small escalated step in the middle of a well known public speaking area. The Governor of the planet was joined with him only a few feet a way. Calvin looked down from the stars and moons and looked upon the people of the city that were well enough to walk and stand. Their cries and yells were well heard, and the tension among the people were beginning to become tighter. There was a greater chance now that the tension would soon break, and there would be a war between the government and its people. The FO looked to his far right and far left and saw the security officers that were stationed around him. He then looked past the crowd of people, and noticed the marines that were in guard mode around a few buildings and around the crowd. Lt Cmdr Capps knew that the Governor and himself needed to calm the public down, but they did not want to give the people false hope or utter lies. You need not to worry about your safety. The small battle does not need to concern you. We will take care of it." The crowd began to quiet down a little, and a few were listening. "We ask two things of you. One, we need you to go home and take care of your families, be with your love ones. And if any of them or you require medical attention go to the hospitals. Our," Calvin pointed to the governor and then himself, "OUR doctors and nurses will see you or your love one." "Second, if you are able we need your help in maintaining this city and planet. "All right you can beam it down now." There was a rising hum in the background and a glowing square of swirling light came into being on the floor before him, the square was the size of a package a foot wide and as high, he would have preferred to see a much bigger one but he was going to have to take what he could get. The glowing energy began to dim and the metallic cast of a box sprang into clarity, in a matter of seconds the hum and energy glow were gone as the transport was completed. Jared bent over and picked up the box, placing it on the desk. Looking around he noted there were enough chairs to seat the Paladin contingent here. A replicator was also inset into the wall, this place would do nicely. His mouth made a moui as he picked it up, attaching the oval piece to the matching vacuum sealed orifice of his helmet over his mouth was simple, one just pressed until one heard the click followed by the cycling of the helmets decontamination routine which seemed to take forever as he regained the desk and once again seated himself.
